Haddon Hall Dresser ( French Provincial Makeover )

Painted French Provincial Dresser

You have no idea what I went through to get these pics.................
Last week I casually mentioned to John that a lot of people take photographs of their pieces outside - and that I'd wished I could do that since our spaces are small and dark ( ish )

John says - Well why don't we do that then?
John says - It makes perfect sense
Suzan says - Oh - I never wanted to ask you because I figured you'd flip out
John says - Why do you always make me out to look that way?
John says - Just ask - I'll help you - no problem

Phew...................

So I scurried around yesterday to try to have it done before sundown

Painted Dresser

Trying to beat the clock so quickly that I didn't finish waxing the skirting or one side - it was now or never

Suzan says - John do you think you could help me bring the dresser outside to take photos?
John says WHAT ARE YOU?  CRAZY?
Suzan says - We talked about this last week - you said to just ask  you !
John says - Well I'm in the middle of a show
Suzan says - It's going to get too dark soon
John says - I'M FED UP OF THIS FURNITURE NONSENSE - NOW WE HAVE TO DRAG IT OUTSIDE AND THEN DRAG IT BACK IN???????
Suzan says - You said it made sense to do it !
John says - You always pick the worst moment possible !

But every moment is the worst moment possible - I can't win.

He wouldn't help me carry it to the back - so most of the pics have an ugly asphalt street behind them

John says - You're going to play with your monkey anyway
W.T.H. ???
It takes a moment before I realize he's talking about Pic Monkey

( the blanket is on the top of the dresser because I'm picturing this as a changing table for a nursery )

Suzan says - Do you think you could help me move it away from the street ?
John says - You're kidding me?  Just take your photos and lets get it back in already

But I insisted and he caved.

I ran around frantically while he stood there with his arms folded and tapping his foot..............
S.T.R.E.S.S.
Add that to the fact that I can't take a decent photo to save my life and there you have it - I won't be
" dancing with dressers outdoors " anytime soon.

My favorite part of this makeover is the knobs

French Provincial dresser knobs - painted

I just gave them a quick coat of a metallic paint that I had on hand (with a brush - usually I spray paint them) I love them - I want to do it to every knob and handle I have in the house LOL
Don't they look a little patina ( ish ) ?

I used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint ™ - Paris Grey & Old White................and clear wax
I did a teeny bit more distressing then I normally do

because she just looked like the perfect shabby canadidate

Annie Sloan Chalk Paint - Paris Grey & Old White

This piece is a Haddon Hall ..........which means it comes from the iconic Canadian EATON'S - a little research told me that they were produced in the mid 50's - and were part of their high end or " Prestigious" line  - a dresser like this would have went for approximately 395.00 in it's day.................big money when you consider that you could buy a house for under 10,000 - but 60 years later it's in incredible shape and will be around another 60 ( and longer ) without a doubt.

I'm pretty certain there's a before pic floating around somewhere in the archives - but I can't find it - and only remembered to take a photo of the last drawer before I painted it as well

Actually it was almost identical to these end tables I made over last year

Just in case you're interested - here's the makeover over of those pieces ( HERE ) these were keepers and are in my bedroom

And that's it - I'm thinking the rest of my furniture makeover photos will be taken indoors............

Except maybe for the next one up !

Which I can't wait to get started !

Have a wonderful Monday everyone
Hugs,
Me

Sneak Peaks only.................& a few conversations

I'm almost finished a big project - almost -
I'm almost finished a smaller project - almost -
And I can't wait to get them out of the house and into somewhere where they'll actually fit.
My place is now officially on the verge of a hoarder's house - seriously -
The dining room has been rendered useless - and the only space where there is no furniture
overflowing is the kitchen and that's strictly because it's basically the size of a bathroom or
I'd have things in there too................hopefully this wknd I can finish up the 7 pieces ( including chairs - do they count if they're part of a dining set lol )?

So just a little sneak peak

and then I staged it before I was even halfway finished it

John walks by - Are we having soup?
Suzan says - Don't be silly - the table's not even finished yet
John says - Why in God's name is there a soup tureen on the table - with salt and pepper and wine glasses and
Suzan says - I just staged it for photos
John says - Ok - I know I don't " get it " but why the hell are you setting the table when you're not finished painting it?
Suzan says - Because I'm going to show everyone a sneak peak of how it's coming along
John says - My God you're full of yourself, aren't you?
Suzan says - Why?
John says - Do you really think people are just waiting around to see what you come up with?
Suzan says - Does it look pretty?
John says - I'm not going to say a word this time - you're on your own with your blog
Suzan says - Can you help me put everything away?  I really need to get back to painting
John says - You make dinner look nicer when it's " pretend " than you do when we actually eat,
do you realize that? ( shaking his head as he carries away the soup tureen forlornly )

AND I do know it's crazy - believe me - and I get quite embarassed when he points these things out - but mostly I just find it hilarious

I'm working on this too

John says - That looks nice - as he goes to brush his hand across the top
Suzan SCREAMS - DON'T TOUCH IT - IT'S WET!!!!!!!!!!
John says - You're taking photos of it - I ASSUMED it was dry - finished
John says - Why would I think that? - shaking his head and walking away
Suzan says - Well why do you have to touch everything - can't you just say it
looks nice without touching it?  I'm not the strange one!
Suzan yells out after him - You know what they say about A.S.S.U.M.E., right?
John yells back - You're C.E.R.T.I.F.I.A.B.L.E.

I've added this as an after thought - because John went and put a screw in the works of my
creativity again
Here's a photo of 2 chairs -

I did a white wash on the lighter one - and was just about to start on the darker one and John said
NO NO - leave it - it looks better dark.
Hmmmm - me no think so - but I HAVE been wrong two times in my life so I could be wrong about this one
I guess ( although I really did promise myself I would never be wrong about anything ever again )
So here's a close up of each -

and the whole set is country inspired -

Yuck - no like at all -

What do you think?  Am I right?  Or am I wrong?  I'm confused! ( not really - because I
think I'm right lol )

And talking about confusion
Here's a photo I took outside my front door - after bracing for Sandy - it swept right
by us................it was warm with a beautiful breeze - but not enough wind to even take the
leaves off the tree outside - and can I remind you, this is Canada - and it's basically November -

There's nothing more pathetic than a discombobulated tree - nothing................

Prayers to all who have and are still weathering the storm - hope their lives return to normal as quickly as possible.
